2015 was an amazing year of discovery for me music-wise. I wanted to truly appreciate pieces of music for the heart and stories artists put into them — I had to become more creatively mindful of my music collection. So, here is a not-so-comprehensive list of some of my favorites from 2015.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis – The viewpoint alone is enough to make me dance for joy. These two have challenged our nation with songs like Same Love and Thirft Shop, but their music boasts values far beyond these trendy, popularized tunes. Definitely worth a listen.
Taylor Swift – All puppy-love-sick-teen jokes aside, Taylor Swift seems to have truly come into her own in the past few years. I appreciate her boldness in sharing her life, hapless loves and journey in her songs as well as her openness to her massive following.
Daughter – Sheer, lyricized honesty.
Civil Wars – Classic folk sounds coupled with poetic lyrics.
Rehab – As the name hints, some guys met in rehab and they started a mashup band of Southern Rock / Hip Hop with other styles mixed in. One of these men is from the Athens, Georgia area, bolstering my pride in this band as they’re repping my home. Their music bespeaks a coming of age within rural, Bible-belt American culture and the resulting darkness many of us face.
