When Drew and I first married, there was no funding for ladies haircuts in the budget and Drew’s hair was cut by the Navy barbers aboard ship. That first summer, my hair was getting on my nerves big time. I love having thick, naturally wavy hair, but in the Southern summertime heat, I couldn’t handle having a heaving mass of frizzed-out, wavy curl on my head. It had to be styled in some way to get it off my neck. I’m bored of ponytails, even the fancy ones… braiding is my favorite, but as a perfectionist, that could take awhile
I remember the first time Drew chopped off some of my hair. Things went pretty well. Tied it in a pony tail, he cut straight across. Turned out okay. A few months later, I needed a trim. We had new scissors specifically for haircuts. They’d been used a few times already and worked like a charm. When we got to the hair, though, it was too short to go back into a ponytail. I had told him to just cut straight across, cleaning up strays and length. He began cutting, then he reached the thickness in the back. I heard a deep sigh as he began forcing the scissors through. Then there was a pulling feeling and I started ow’ing…
…the scissors. They were SNAGGED IN MY HAIR!
So I got a surprise pixie cut that night.
Most people would never let Drew near their hair after that. But… our circumstances and lacking funds often necessitate this. I often cut my own hair, using the bathroom mirror, but the last time I managed to trim the back by myself, I also trimmed the flesh between two knuckles. Sometimes, it takes me an evening to let a new cut ‘grow on me’ [coincidental pun there]. For every time I haven’t originally liked a cut Drew’s given me, it’s always grown back.
Trusting Drew with my hair has been a huge step in my life — one I’m so happy to have chosen. Today, as I wake with another new cut, I want to challenge you. Who in your life could you offer a little more trust to? It doesn’t have to be your spouse, nor does it have to involve your hair. But how can you build trust today? How can you make someone’s day by showing ultimate confidence in them?
